Tom Poland: [00:00:09] Hello everyone. A very warm welcome for another edition of Marketing The Invisible. I’m Tom Poland, beaming out to you from little Castaways Beach in Queensland, Australia. Joined today by Ben Settle. Ben, welcome and good day.

Ben Settle: [00:00:21] Thank you. Appreciate it.

Tom Poland: [00:00:23] Where are you hanging out man?

Ben Settle: [00:00:24] I’m in Gold Beach, Oregon.

Tom Poland: [00:00:27] Gold Beach, Oregon, beautiful. Both next to beaches, different parts of the world. Folks, if you know Ben, here’s his bio which is the most unique and the shortest bio I’ve ever read. Wake up, write an e-mail, and I’m done for the day. Like a bum who gets paid. So that gives you a little clue to the quirky brilliance that is Ben Settle. The title of our interview is “How to Enjoy a One Email Workday”. We’re going to tell you how to do that just seven minutes. Ben, our time is going to start now. Question number one, who is your ideal client?

Ben Settle: [00:01:05] Someone who buys everything I sell, uses it, benefits from it and tells all their friends about it, abundantly.

Tom Poland: [00:01:11] Sounds like a plan. Question number two, what’s the problem you solve for your clients?

Ben Settle: [00:01:18] They don’t have enough sale. They don’t, they don’t make enough sales, they’re flitting around from social media and whatever the hot shiny new object of the day is. They don’t stick with one thing. I give them focus. Write an email every day. Do it the way I show them and they make sales consistently. And that helps a lot with their money problems.

Tom Poland: [00:01:36] Perfect. Question number three, therefore, is probably reasonably simple to answer. The typical symptoms of people that don’t have enough sales.

Ben Settle: [00:01:44] You know, they hang up on social media all day. They waste all their time. They’re not, they’re busy but they’re not working. But I, if I can show them how to write one e-mail per day for two, three, foreign words and be done, that gives them that focus. They can do other stuff, of course, but that at least keeps them on track. So that’s huge, that’s a huge symptom out there actually.

Tom Poland: [00:02:03] And I imagine they’ve probably had some anxiety around cash flow and incomes up and down a fair bit. Thank you. Question number four, five minutes forty-five left. You’ve already alluded to this I think but the common mistakes, people don’t have enough sales, they’ve got rollercoaster income, they’re trying to get more sales. What are some of the mistakes, what are some of the things they do wrong before they find your solution?

Ben Settle: [00:02:28] They’re not sticking with anything. You know, it’s never been easier to make, of our business to make sale. I mean, we are the best time and history forget. And yet they’re always splitting from one thing to the next. If they just focus on one thing, whether it be email or something else. And specialize in that and be great at it and apply it, they’ll find that sales come a lot more consistently. And they build a nice brand and audience, and a lot of things that kind of elude them fall into place.

Tom Poland: [00:02:55] Perfect. Thank you. Five minutes left and question number five. What’s one valuable free action that an audience member could take that’s perhaps not going to give the whole solution, which you might better provide otherwise, but this is going to take them a step in the right direction?

Ben Settle: [00:03:10] Yeah. I can tell I; I think anyone who has an email list who does what I’m about to say, you can apply as a social media to, I guess. But get your word processor out, write an email, in your own voice and personality, tell a story about someone who’s had a problem that you solved. Make it a real story. And then at the end say look I can help you with that. I have this offer. Here’s the link and if you want to give him a, a sale, like a discount or something even better. But just do that. Like just doing that I think people will finally get sales like the first time they do it.

Tom Poland: [00:03:42] Fantastic. We’ve got a lot of time left. Two questions left. So, I’m going to throw an extra one at you but let’s finish the ones that we were meant to do first. Question number six is, what’s one value-free resource where we could direct people to that they’re going to learn more about how you work with your clients and how to do what you do?

Ben Settle: [00:03:59] Bensettle.com. Go there you get a free is…well if you, if you give me your email address I should say, you’ll get a free issue of my email players newsletter. To print the newsletter, I give you a PDF for the first issue. There are 24 ways in there to start making a sale e-mail, like, right away. And people apply it to other stuff too. And just use it, see if it works for you, it’s totally free. And if it works you might want more, if not that’s ok, either way. But that’s at bensettle.com, you don’t have to give me your e-mail address, you can just go the blog if you want but you won’t get the free e-mail players issue.

Tom Poland: [00:04:31] Yeah. I think it’s worth an e-mail address for that.

Ben Settle: [00:04:33] Yeah.

Tom Poland: [00:04:34] Thanks for that Ben. Three and a half minutes left. Quest number seven is, what’s the one question that I should have asked you but didn’t?

Ben Settle: [00:04:41] Well other than my favorite color, I don’t know, I mean, I love this format actually. This rapid-fire seven-minute format.

Tom Poland: [00:04:49] Right.

Ben Settle: [00:04:50] I can’t, I just think that it’s a brilliant way of doing podcast actually.

Tom Poland: [00:04:54] Well I could either throw an extra question and I mentioned I might do that. We’re e-mailing to e-mail list and one of the most common questions I get is, what if I don’t have an e-mail, how do I start an e-mail list?

Ben Settle: [00:05:06] That’s, okay, that’s a good question. If you have a skill that you know, that you have. I don’t care if it’s writing, marketing, consulting, coaching, whatever it is. Go to somebody in your market who does have an e-mail list, who has people on that list who could make good customers for you and offer to barter that skill for them in exchange for them mailing their e-mail list about you to go to your opt-in list and join your e-mail. It’s the fastest way, its referral leads, you’re going to get a way higher quality leads and paid ads. And it can happen very very quickly like within a day if you have a couple of hundred opt-ins.

Tom Poland: [00:05:39] Fantastic. And off you go from there. Ben Settled, the shortest bio ever, the shortest interview ever. Thank you so much for the value.

Ben Settle: [00:05:49] You’re welcome. Thank you for having me out. This is great.

Tom Poland: [00:05:52] Cheers everyone.
