Hello, everyone, and a very warm welcome to another edition of Marketing The Invisible. My name is Tom Poland, beaming out to you from Little Castaways Beach in Queensland, Australia, joined today by Melanie Colling. Melanie, where are you hanging out?

Melanie Colling 00:22
I’m hanging out in sunny Melbourne today.

Tom Poland 00:25
Sunny. That’s- Right? I mean, what’s- Melbourne’s the like-

Melanie Colling 00:27
It is sunny. Four different seasons.

Tom Poland 00:31
City of four Seasons in one day, yeah? So folks, for those of you don’t know Melanie, she is the Founder of Purpose Driven Projects and the Co-founder of Experts On Air, The Podcast Booking Agency, one of the very best ways to generate new clients, by the way, host of, I’m not telling you that Melanie because I think you probably already know that, I’m telling our valued listeners, host of Business Connections Podcast, Amazon international best-selling co-author of You Are A Genius. And I would love to see you in the new edition, say you are a frickin genius, just emphasize that, but a great title. So the title today, talking titles, is “How to Move From Anonymous to Authority”. And Melanie is going to tell you, folks, how to do that in just seven minutes. Melanie, our time starts now. Question number one is who is your ideal client?

Melanie Colling 01:24
So our ideal client is someone who’s an expert in their field or industry or niche, and they want to try and get their message or knowledge or story out there to more people in less time. So they usually service-based business owners, they like coaches, consultants, you know, authors, speakers, that kind.

Tom Poland 01:41
Right. Perfect, thank you. And so question two and, six and a half minutes left, what’s the problem yourself for them?

Melanie Colling 01:48
So we help them get heard, get seen, get known for what they do, and help them become an authority in the industry, field, or niche so- and also move them from chasing clients, opportunities, etc, to them attracting clients, opportunities partners. So rather than them, you know, having to go out and finding a mall, we’re attracting them to them.

Tom Poland 02:10
That sounds much gentler, more authentic, positioning psychology be must make powerful. So let’s go to question three, and we’ve got six minutes left. What are some of the typical symptoms that your ideal clients are going to be experiencing before they find your solution? Well, obviously, they probably feel like one obviously, but they probably feel like they’re the world’s best-kept secret. What else is going on in their business or their life that has them kind of heads up going, “I need to speak with Melanie”?

Melanie Colling 02:39
Yeah, so they’re trying to do everything themselves. So they’re usually feeling overwhelmed, busy, trying to do all the marketing stuff, which is kind of not what they’re meant to be doing because they get paid to deliver their service, whatever that might be. Not all this other stuff that you know, kind of as business owners, you need to be doing. And so they’re kind of just busy on this, you know, little guinea pig, rat wheel, going round and round, and thinking, you know, I need to get off, but I don’t know what to stop and what to you know, do, etc. so they kind of just don’t know what’s going on.

Tom Poland 03:14
So the world’s best-kept secret trying to do everything themselves. The smart people, they want to grow their businesses, so that leads us to question number four and five minutes left, what are some of the common mistakes that your ideal clients have made before they find your solution?

Melanie Colling 03:29
So just off the back of that question, it’s, you know, they’re doing it on themselves. And they kind of know that they shouldn’t be, but they don’t know, you know, who to go to, you know, who did they trust, which beat do they do, they think they’ve got to do everything. It’s like choosing which bits the right choice, and maybe they’ve gone through that before and something hasn’t worked, or they’ve engaged someone before, you know, and try to outsource some element and hasn’t gone well. And so they’re like, “Well, I’ll just take it back in house and do it myself.” Or they don’t know where they’re wanting to go. So they don’t have a goal or a strategy to kind of get there, it’s not really clear, and they may not understand where their audience is. So they might think that they’ve got to be on, you know, every social media platform and do every marketing strategy possible. But actually, you know, their clients might just be on LinkedIn, for example, and they’re doing all this stuff on Facebook, which is kind of a waste of time. So they might also have a scattergun approach which I’ll just go out and you know, do everything because I don’t want to miss everything. And they kind of- they’re not being clear over complicating the process.

Tom Poland 04:31
Right.

Melanie Colling 04:32
And, etc, etc.

Tom Poland 04:33
Okay, trying to be all things to all people and-

Melanie Colling 04:35
Yeah.

Tom Poland 04:41
Not being anything to anyone. So what’s, question number five, let’s flip this around and get moving forward. What’s one valuable free action that someone’s listening to this that’s a bit overwhelmed, a bit bewildered, tend to what to do their marketing, what’s one thing they could do that’s going to not solve the whole problem, but move things forward one step?

Melanie Colling 04:54
Yeah. So the best piece of advice is just to take a step back, and just have a look at where are you today. Where do you want to go in your business? And like, what’s your plan to get there? Just, you know, off the top of your head, how would you like to get there, whether that’s you doing it yourself or someone else? And then that kind of takes into account, you know, what platforms do you like being on? You know, where do you like hanging out? Where do you think your clients are hanging out? What content do you want to share? You know, how do you enjoy sharing that? Do you enjoy talking to other people like we’re doing today, or writing, you know, doing videos, etc? What is it that you like, and then make that plan, and then you’ll be a lot clearer?

Tom Poland 05:33
Perfect, thank you very much. Question six, two and a half minutes left, one valuable free resource we could direct people to that’s going to help them get even more clarity and move forward even, a few more steps forward.

Melanie Colling 05:46
Yes, I’d say jump onto the website, which is www.expertsonair.fm, and it’ll show you all things podcasting. And on there, you’ll be able to work out, you know, “Is podcast for you? Why is it for you? Which option do you want to, you know, suit you?” There’s a free masterclass on there, so if you’re not sure, you can go and watch the video. And we’ve got all different options, so you can create your own podcast, you can learn how to do your own podcast if you want to know all the ins and outs of how to do that. And we’ve also got a guest bookings agency so we can help you get booked on other people’s podcasts.

Tom Poland 06:22
Which means that folks listening to this could do what they love to do, which is just work with clients, and you’re actually doing all the outreach for them. Because I know, that was a big breakthrough for me when I realized that I didn’t, you know, the- rather than looking for new clients, it was a big breakthrough, when I realized I could look for people who had my new clients. That’s-

Melanie Colling 06:41
Yes

Tom Poland 06:42
You want a podcast host has is they have your potential ideal clients in there. So let’s go to question number seven. So that’s expertsonair.fm. Freddie Mercury, FM, little plug there for Queen. So question number seven, and we’ve got a minute left, what’s the one question I should have asked you but didn’t?

Melanie Colling 07:01
Well, the one question you should ask me, why podcasting?

Tom Poland 07:04
So why podcasting?

Melanie Colling 07:06
Because it’s so easy, and it’s so much fun.

Tom Poland 07:10
It’s so easy, and I’m just gonna add that it’s so much more fun, and it’s profitable, and you get to meet some seriously interesting people and get your message out to the marketplace with a medium which is, wow, it’s effective, but it’s also cost-effective.

Melanie Colling 07:24
Absolutely. And it’s not as busy as and over, you know, run with people. So there are a million podcasts out there, but they’re not all active in comparison to 600 million blogs. So, where are you going to be seen?

Tom Poland 07:37
Or handing Mark Zuckerberg advertising money for Facebook ads? That’s-

Melanie Colling 07:41
Exactly.

Tom Poland 07:42
A lot of really poor quality leads. Melanie Colling, thanks so much for your time.

Melanie Colling 07:47
Pleasure. Thanks, Tom.
