Greetings, everyone, and a very warm welcome to another edition of Marketing the Invisible. My name is Tom Poland, joined today by Ivana Taylor. Ivana, good day from down under. A very warm welcome. Where are you hanging out?

Ivana Taylor 00:21
I’m hanging out in equally sunny and brisk Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States,

Tom Poland 00:29
Alright, there is one of the funniest people in the world, Drew Carey and his cohorts. So for those of you who don’t know Ivana, she publishes DIYMarketers.com where solopreneurs can learn how to get more customers on 17 miserable, lousy, little bucks a day, which is pretty amazing! So the title is, “How to Use Your Marketing Superpowers to Do Less Marketing, and Make More Money”. And who wouldn’t want that? Even though I love my marketing, I’m drawn towards the title. So, Ivana, our seven minutes is gonna start now. Question number one, who’s your ideal client?

Ivana Taylor 01:02
Well, Tom, since I’m at publication, I actually have two clients, right? I’ve got the readers, of course, who are solopreneurs, and small business owners, entrepreneurs, all those kinds of types. But I also have secret clients and not-so-secret clients who are brands, sponsored brands who want to build those relationships with these small business owners. And they use my area of expertise. Some people call it “influencer marketing”. I don’t know if I’d like to go that far. Most brands like to choose subject matter experts to explain their products and services to their peer groups of small business owners. So those are my two audiences.

Tom Poland 01:42
Perfect! So can you give me one quick example of one of those influencers, so to speak, and what their service might be and how that works? Real quick.

Ivana Taylor 01:50
Okay, real quick! So let’s- I’m going to give you a great example. Canon printers! Most of us think about HP printers, right? But Canon wanted to have revamped a printer. Used a lot of small business research to create a brand new printer– a simplified printer! Tool, simplified! You can do cool DIY marketing. They called me along with Barbara Corcoran and a few of my other friends. And they put a campaign together that we ran. This was the most fun I’ve ever had for six months. I wrote an article every single month. I promoted it for them. And they gave away a printer! I got to give a printer away every single month for six months. So that’s what a campaign looks like.

Tom Poland 02:31
Great example! Thank you for that. Tell us more about the problem you solve. Five and a half minutes left still.

Ivana Taylor 02:36
Okay, great. So the problem I typically solve for business owners and entrepreneurs is I help them get out of marketing overwhelm. Do less marketing, make more money, right? I help them choose the right strategy, pick the right tactics, and then select some tools to automate everything. Pretty simple!

Tom Poland 02:52
Wow! Yeah, it sounds simple. But I’m sure the devil’s in the detail. I’m sure there’s a lot to it. So tell us, question number three is what are some of the typical symptoms that your ideal clients are experiencing before they find your solution?

Ivana Taylor 03:04
Let me tell you, Tom, and don’t be afraid, you guys, listeners, when you see yourself in these descriptions, right? Number one, you are spending money on marketing and getting nothing! I call that “the slot machine”. You give it more money, it gives you nothing. Number two, your customers are complaining about the price. If they’re complaining about the price, and they’re telling you to drop your prices, they have no idea why they should choose you. That’s a problem! Number three, you are toggling between marketing your business and trying to get those customers and then having to serve those customers. That is a problem. Those are my top three I run into always.

Tom Poland 03:42
Perfect! Thank you for that. Love “the slot machine” analogy. And so common, isn’t it? Those people are spending money and not getting rich in their marketing. So question number four, we’re talking about business owners, probably coaches, consultants, some manufacturers, who knows? And they’re growth-oriented. So they’re going to try stuff, and they’ll have your expertise. It doesn’t work, the slot machine thing. So what are some of those common mistakes that people are making before they find your solution? Four minutes left.

Ivana Taylor 04:07
Well, the common mistake, Tom, is that they, as you said, they’re stuck in this constant “do loop”. So here’s what it looks like, right? They search on something like “marketing strategies”, and then they get articles, “16 Marketing Strategies”, “26”, “105”. I’ve been guilty, written some of those! And then what do they do? They start doing them, and go like, “I could do this”, or they see a coach or they enter a challenge or program. They’re like, “I can do this!” And then they’re off doing a thousand things, and then you know, it’s just a cycle! My goal is to get them to not do that. Focus, focus, focus!

Tom Poland 04:40
Right. That’s so true. Everything you’re saying is so true! Three minutes left, let’s flip it to moving folks forward. Question number five is what’s one valuable free action that someone listening to this could take? It’s not going to solve the whole problem, but it might take them a step in the right direction.

Ivana Taylor 04:55
The first thing I’m going to tell them, I’m going to talk really fast because there’s lots of goodness in here, choose one marketing strategy. Don’t worry! There aren’t hundreds, there are three. Content marketing, you know what that is? Direct Marketing– that’s like selling, talking, right? And the final one is advertising. Don’t forget that one because that’s not necessarily money thrown away! So you got three to choose from. Pick one! Now you’re going to choose two supporting tactics. People, email is not a strategy! Email is a tactic. Podcasting is a tactic. And then the strategy you pick will tell you what you’re going to put in there, right? Like right now we’re doing content, right? Finally, use the tools. People, use the tools! There are a lot of free tools. There’s a lot of cheap tools. If you pick a strategy and choose your tactics, the tools will almost choose themselves. And that’s how you do marketing on $17 a day!

Tom Poland 05:48
And stick to them. Don’t go and place another squirrel somewhere else after the first week. And you’re a great example of someone who’s stuck to a strategy and stuck to a tactic and has made it work.

Ivana Taylor 05:58
Not always, Tom. I wish I had! That can’t come on so passionate, right?

Tom Poland 06:03
Right. Yeah. But you’ve been there and you’ve done it and you’ve made the mistakes. So you can help folks to avoid them. Question six, let’s give people somewhere they can go to. A valuable free resource where they can dig a little deeper into your expertise.

Ivana Taylor 06:16
Just go to my homepage, people, DIYMarketers.com. You’re going to see a very cool superpower quiz in there. And hint, hint! That is a list-building funnel. You take the quiz, you’ll get a report, you’ll get to sit in on a webinar. And on that webinar, you’re gonna learn which strategy is right for you! So you will be able to pick one and make awesome choices.

Tom Poland 06:38
Everything you’ve recommended in this interview is going to get deeper, folks, with- the take the Marketing Superpower Quiz and the follow-up webinar. Lots more time to dive deep into that. Thank you so much for that! Question seven, what’s the one question I should have asked you, but didn’t? You got a minute left to answer.

Ivana Taylor 06:53
Oh, you didn’t ask me, what is it that millionaire marketers know that the rest of us don’t?

Tom Poland 06:59
What is it the millionaire marketers know that the rest of us don’t?

Ivana Taylor 07:02
Well, guess what? Millionaire marketers– they started out probably like all of us. But guess what? They figured out what their strength was. They did the “do loop”. They did all the same things that we were doing. But you know what they did that we don’t do? They notice that one thing they were just marginally better at that they liked! They found their strength and they doubled down. So whether that strength was email, video, whatever it is, it’s not necessarily the answer for you. It was the answer for them! So you find your strength. Find out one thing that you do well, that you enjoy, that on your worst day you want to do, double down!

Tom Poland 07:38
Folks, this stuff works. Get your superpower, this thing that you want to do that works really well, and stick to it. Double down! So true. Thank you so much for your time, your wisdom, and your insights, Ivana.

Ivana Taylor 07:50
Thank you, Tom. This was great!
